About WHM

WHM is short for Web Hosting Manager. If you have a reseller account or root access (generally you will only have root access if you have your own server or a VPS, which acts like a dedicated server). Web Hosting Manager is operated and owned by cPanel.net.

If you are using Web Hosting Manager you are most likely on a Linux machine. While as of 2008 cPanel is available for Windoes Servers, cPanel shows up very often on Linux servers.

If you have reseller access you do need to be careful about what you do. While you generally can't affect the server as a whole unintentionally, you can affect your customers' accounts (if you are using it to resell hosting that is) or affect your own accounts.

If you have root access you need to be very careful. Not only can you affect your clients, your client's clients, and your own accounts, but possibly render the server useless and have to have the whole operating system reinstalled.
